Dr. Oz Creates a Hemp Program for Medicare

Although marijuana is still languishing in a Controlled Substances Act limbo, at least the medicare promise is coming to fruition.

Eligible patients within the Medicare program can now receive up to $500 worth of hemp-derived products for pain-reduction.

Dr. Oz put out a press release, saying “CMS is committed to innovation that meets patients where they are while maintaining strong safeguards and clinical oversight. Under the president’s leadership, we’re expanding the tools available to improve patients’ health while generating important insights into how providers can use these tools safely and effectively in real-world care settings.”

Importantly, the agency plans to test all products. “Products must comply with applicable federal, state, and local laws and meet quality and safety standards, including third-party testing for potency and contaminants.”

There are some guardrails attached to the release. Inhalable products are prohibited, and they can have no more than 0.3% of delta-9 THC and only 3 milligrams of total THC per serving. However, this could go down to 0.4 milligrams if the new additions to the Farm Bill go into effect in November of this year, as they are planned to.

Despite some lawsuits in its way, it does look like this is moving forward.
