Now that all the anticipation and rumors are over, we’re getting some of veil lifted on the process that got us to Schedule III for marijuana. Apparently the discussions were vast, including a path that would lead marijuana into Schedule II instead of III.

Jim Hagedorn, the CEO of Scotts Miracle-Gro, was in the room during a long meeting about the proposed change, said Trump had dismissed the idea to move to Schedule II as “half-assed” and that they were “doing III or we do nothing.”

Apparently Trump had made up his mind on moving marijuana to Schedule III all the way back in August, telling the CEO back then that he would personally oversee the change.

Schedule II drugs, like cocaine and morphine, have a higher chance of abuse and are therefore much more regulated than Schedule III. Research would still be difficult, and the 280e tax deductions for businesses wouldn’t be possible. It would basically be no change for marijuana.
