Ted Cruz jokes about smoking weed with Elon despite opposition to legalization

Turns out Ted Cruz has a podcast! That shines a little light into the my media diet’s blind spots, but that changes now that he had Elon Musk on for a chat.

The discussion was pretty much as expected, with a good amount of smoke being blown up Musk’s anus, but a joke about halfway through has caught some attention.

Elon remarks that he was born 69 days after 4/20, which brings Ted Cruz to a question he brought up before the podcast started about lighting up a joint with Elon to “beat Rogan’s views”.

“…but I was pretty sure it might cause a scandal if we smoked pot in the White House,” Cruz concluded.

“What if it just turned out to be a chocolate cigar?” asked Musk.

That’s all fine and harmless, but it is pretty frustrating within the context of Ted Cruz’s views on marijuana.

Cruz has always been against federal legalization, and last year was completely opposed to its potential move to Schedule III, citing a potential increase in car accidents. There’s no data on the car accidents, however it is true that a good amount of smokers have no qualms with getting behind the wheel after lighting up.

This has the vibes of a younger guy who acts like he has way more life experience than he does when he’s in the presence of a cool older dude. There’s no way Cruz would ever pull out a joint and smoke with Elon, and he probably finds it morally corrupt to do so. Yet, when he’s around Mr. Musk, he’ll pretend it’s funny. If anything, this highlights the confusing direction Republicans are facing when it comes to the weed, with their constituents pulling them in both directions simultaneously.
