Could Massachusetts Lose its Legal Marjiuana Market?

A group in Massachusetts has been working to gather enough signatures to put marijuana legalization back on the ballot in 2026.

The Act to Restore a Sensible Marijuana Policy have up to December 3rd to get 75,000 signatures, and it says it’s on track to do so. In fact, their goal is to go above and beyond and get 100,000 signatures.

Their measure would repeal Chapters 94G and 64N in state law. This would mean that cultivation and gifting would still be legal, but the retail market would be repealed entirely. Medical marijuana sales would be left untouched.

This is all just the fight to get the measure on the ballot, so what about its chances of a favorable vote once its there?

In 2016, Massachusetts voted in favor of legal recreational marijuana with 53% of the public on its side. Last year, MassInc conducted a poll that found 65% of people believing legal marijuana to be the right choice. With even more of a majority on its side, it seems unlikely this ballot measure will be successful.

The entire situation may give marijuana advocates a much-needed motivational-push, so the silver-lining is potentially bright here.
