Cannabis Testing Fraud Coming from New York

Just last week we posted a story of a Colorado company deciding to take lab testing into their own hands and see how off the mark labels in the state really were. In that case, they found almost every sample sent in to have a wide gap between the results and what was being presented to consumers.

The same thing is going on in New York, just as the cannabis is finally finding its footing in the state. 2 labs sent a letter to the state Office of Cannabis Management in December that described the inconsistencies they had found in the 14 other labs in the state. These included inflated THC percentages and cannabinoid profiles in vape oil cartridges that didn’t make sense.

“If these issues remain unaddressed, we fear that unethical and unsafe lab results will become the norm, mirroring situations seen in other states,” said the letter.

Two months later, the OCM hasn’t done much. Also in the meantime, an owner of a cultivator from Amsterdam, New York says he was approached by a lab salesperson who promised high-potency test results for a price. It’s pretty clear that without any regulation the lab environment will just grow more and more corrupt.

The OCM made no comment when approached by MJBizDaily.

This is a problem that’s growing across the country, with some labs in Massachusetts getting sued for inflating potency numbers.

California recently increased pressure on lab results, leading to some labs going out of business for testing THC accurately.

This is clearly ongoing and we’ll most likely be hearing from the OCM in New York soon about how it will combat the problem.
