Trump’s Drug Czar seems to be friendly towards marijuana

Although not as breakneck of a speed as the last time around, Trump’s administration is still pretty quickly shuffling around.

There’s a new drug czar coming in to control the Office of National Drug Control Policy, and she seems to be a promising choice.

Sara Carter’s job will be to create the agenda around drug policy on a federal level, and she has spoken about marijuana in the past.

Now, the bar is set pretty low for anyone in the Trump administration when it comes to weed, but at the very least Carter has said in an interview that she doesn’t “have any problem if it’s legalized and it’s monitored,” which is pretty much all anyone’s asking for. She goes on to say “I mean, I may have my own issues of how I feel about that, but I do believe that cannabis for medicinal purposes and medical reasons is a fantastic way of handling—especially for people with cancer and other illnesses, you know—of handling the illness and the side effects of the medication and those illnesses. So I’m not saying we’ve gotta make it illegal.”

So, at the very least, Carter doesn’t have a vendetta against marijuana. She has also talked about the danger of pesticides found in marijuana coming from Chinese cartels, which all should theoretically point to a desire to legalize and regulate. Unfortunately, a lot of times the fear of dirty weed stops there and puts all of it in the same box. Carter’s views expand beyond that slightly, so that’s some good news should she get confirmed by the Senate.
