Snapchat’s AI won’t talk about marijuana

It’s been interesting over the years to see how large social media companies have been dealing with marijuana content on their platforms. On Tiktok, you have to use code, Facebook doesn’t allow any advertising, and X is pretty much a free-for-all. But now, the focus has turned to how AI programs answer any questions dealing with the plant.

For instance, we now have a published study that looks into the way Snapchat’s new AI deals with marijuana on its platform.

What it found is that the AI is much more willing to answer any questions about Delta-8 as it is to talk about any other forms of THC. This makes sense, considering Delta-8 is technically legal within the Farm Bill loophole. However, it’s a little frustrating for marijuana enthusiasts out there considering it’s much less regulated than the THC that is found in legal states despite it’s federal legality.

Snapchat claims that it blocks drug keywords, but only seems to block words like “weed” and “THC”, not delta-8. It seems Snapchat is going strictly with the federal lines and not throwing any caveats within it.

It makes sense to me why they would do this, but unfortunately it gets in the way of education and awareness if the only thing people are able to learn about is the delta-8 derivative, which again is pretty much a wild west when it comes to regulation and research.

This of course is all constantly shifting with new laws every year, and the delta-8 loophole seems to be living on thin ice at the moment, so we’ll see how this transforms over the years.
