JD Vance Continues the Fentanyl in Marijuana Myth

It’s no secret that JD Vance is against the legalization of marijuana. He was reluctant as he watched his state of Ohio become the most recent state to legalize, although agrees that states should do what they want when it comes to the plant.

Recently during a speech in Wisconsin, Vance brought up that he was told by a cop that marijuana bags are being laced with fentanyl.

“I talked to another police officer, he talked about… We have fentanyl not just in heroin and opioids, and even prescription pills (or I guess non-prescription pills that are sold on the street), we’ve got fentanyl in our marijuana bags that our teenagers are using.”

His larger point was that these laced “bags” of marijuana are coming from a poorly controlled border with Mexico, which is effecting teenagers all the way up in Wisconsin.

The problem with this argument is that there’s zero evidence of any of it. We’ve tackled this story in the past, and found that many instances where there was a claim of fentanyl-contaminated marijuana turned out to not be true. The Office in Cannabis Management in New York also looked into the issue and found no basis in fact.

It could very well be that a police officer told JD Vance of an anecdote. It could also very well be that this officer had poor information, or at least not all of the information before telling the Vice President nominee who then went on to spread the rumor.

It’s not the best talking point, considering if it were true, the best antidote would be to legalize the market and regulate these “marijuana bags.”
