DEA Nominee Won’t Say Where He Lands on Marijuana

The DEA is back to trying to find an administrator, and the confirmation process is well underway for Terrance Cole, Trump’s new pick.

Two Democratic Senators sent a letter to Cole asking about his stance on marijuana rescheduling, and he gave a bit of a nonanswer.

In his response, he wrote that he will “give the matter careful consideration after consulting with appropriate personnel within the Drug Enforcement Administration, familiarizing myself with the current status of the regulatory process, and reviewing all relevant information.”

Honestly, that’s exactly what you’d want from someone in this position. The difficulty lies in the politics of the matter, meaning this is an easy way to not answer a question that could ruin his chances of confirmation if he chooses the wrong side of the issue.

In the past, Cole has tried to link marijuana use to higher suicide risk.

Last month he did say that examining the rescheduling would be a priority, so it’s certainly on his mind.

If we take his words in good faith, we can assume that Cole would step into office and take a pragmatic approach to the scheduling of marijuana and accept all of the evidence given. Judging by Trump’s heavy hand in all departments, it seems highly unlikely this would be the case.
