A bust occurred in Clackamas and Marion counties in Oregon last week that resulted in the seizing of $20 million worth of illicit marijuana. This amounted to 110,000 plants and 81,000 pounds of bulk cannabis. It was a 3 day operation in total spanning two counties.
One person, Jaimee Virrueta-Gomez of Gerber, California, was arrested as the ringleader. When the sites were raided some very poor conditions were found for laborers, including a lack of some basic amenities like running water, electricity, or plumbing.
This is another sign that the illicit market is extremely good business for people who are willing to cut some extreme corners to make a profit. With taxes being so high, there’s an easy undercurrent to become a part of that can bypass all of that extra cost entirely, and at some point the contrast becomes so steep that it’s a no-brainer for many consumers. At least, if you’re willing to look beyond the unethical treatment of workers while you make your purchase.
