Trump Can Outplay Democrats By Legalizing Cannabis According to Roger Stone

One of President Donald Trump’s longtime advisors, Roger Stone, says the current administration has a unique opportunity to make history on marijuana policy—something Democrats, he argues, failed to accomplish when they controlled both the White House and Congress.

Speaking Monday on his 77WABC Radio program The Stone Zone, Stone responded to Trump’s recent social media post highlighting the health benefits of hemp-derived CBD, particularly for older Americans. The former campaign strategist said the video underscored the president’s long-standing support for medical cannabis and states’ rights.

“The video posted by President Trump talked about the use of CBD oil to alleviate pain, lower stress and result in better sleep,” Stone said. “It does not get you high, and it is the source of most of the medicinal benefits from the cannabis plant.”

Stone noted that Trump has consistently supported letting states determine their own cannabis policies, dating back to his 2016 campaign. He praised the president for considering a move to reclassify marijuana under the Controlled Substances Act—a shift from Schedule I to Schedule III that Trump has said could be decided “within weeks.”

While Stone slightly overstated what such a change would accomplish—since rescheduling would not fully legalize marijuana or resolve all banking issues—it would loosen federal research restrictions and allow state-licensed cannabis businesses to claim standard tax deductions.

“This particular move by the president is unpopular with Big Pharma,” Stone argued. “They’d rather sell you drugs that do far more damage. Alcohol is legal and taxed, yet it’s more harmful than cannabis could ever be. So why not treat marijuana the same way?”

Stone, who worked for Presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan before advising Trump, said his support for legalization stems from personal experience—his father used cannabis to ease pain while dying of cancer.

He contrasted Trump’s potential reform with past Democratic administrations. “Democrats always talk about marijuana reform,” Stone said. “But under Obama and Biden, when they had the power, they did nothing. I pray that President Trump will make a very different decision.”
