Texas lawmakers will attempt a THC ban next year

Texas is a huge state, and within it lie multitudes. This is why there are a handful of cities decriminalizing marijuana while the larger whole is adamantly against the idea. Naturally, this has caused some friction, and resulted in the State Attorney General suing some of the cities who have made this move.

Now, the Leutenant Governor Dan Patrick is hacking away at the hemp industry in the state with a bill that would ban all THC products, including delta-9 and delta-8. In 2019, lawmakers had passed a bill that allowed the sale of consumable hemp.

Dan Patrick elaborates in a statement, “Dangerously, retailers exploited the agriculture law to sell life-threatening, unregulated forms of THC to the public and made them easily accessible. Since 2023, thousands of stores selling hazardous THC products have popped up in communities across the state, and many sell products, including beverages, that have three to four times the THC content which might be found in marijuana purchased from a drug dealer.”

According to some advocates, a THC ban would cause havoc for the hemp industry in the state. This would also give the state government more grounds to go after the cities who are decriminalizing marijuana, considering that the lawsuit route isn’t entirely effective. One of these lawsuits was already thrown out.
