Some researchers in South Korea were searching inside the structure of a cannabis plant for anti-tumor properties when they came across something surprising. Without looking for it, they came across a cannabinoid that hasn’t yet been discovered.

Newly titled cannabielsoxa, the cannabinoid was extracted and studied more closely. Considering this cannabinoid wasn’t the focus of the study, we’ll have to wait for another team to come around and poke at its intricacies, but this wasn’t the only thing of note found within the study.

The researchers were looking specifically for cannabinoids that had anti-tumor qualities, namely that they would be toxic to neuroblastoma, a cancer common in children. A number of cannabinoids, including CBD, CBDA, CBDA-ME, CBG, and delta-8 THC all showed potential effectiveness against neuroblastoma. The new cannabinoid, cannabielsoxa, did not show much promise against neuroblastoma.

We’ll have to wait and see what comes of this new discovery, but in the meantime it’s a good reminder of how complex and detailed the cannabis plant really is.
