Researchers at UBC Okanagan have taken it upon themselves to make a standardized system of cannabis doses. This has been extremely tricky over the years because of the many ways in which people consume marijuana. How can you equate a puff of a spliff with a small little piece of a weed brownie?

The Index of Cannabis Equivalence has been created for this purpose and it’s been published in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs.

“The ICE addresses this challenge by providing user-informed equivalencies grounded in psychoactive effects, offering a practical framework to help individuals make informed decisions and better manage their cannabis use,” says Dr. St. Pierre.

After analyzing data from 1,300 participants, they’ve created a “low dose” standard in different categories:

  • Two puffs from a joint, pipe, or vaporizer
  • One 5 milligram THC edible
  • A quarter dab of concentrate
  • One bong hit

The question of tolerance certainly comes up next, but these were all created for new and infrequent consumers.

So the answer posed at the beginning of this article is: two. Two puffs of a joint equals one bong hit. Now you know.
