Has Kamala Harris’ view on marijuana changed?

Kamala Harris, the very likely Democratic nominee for president in November, has had a rollercoaster ride relationship with the Democratic party. She began her career as the Attorney General for California, and wrote a book called “Smart on Crime.” Then, in 2020 when she was running for President, the Democratic party went through a moment of very progressive change, and Harris changed with it. She rarely spoke of her background as a prosecutor and instead leaned on her ethnic roots. Now, a more centrist sheen is prevalent in the Democratic Party, and Harris’ prosecuting experience is what’s getting the most play.

Her views on marijuana correlates with her changing views over the years, but has it reverted backwards?

Luckily, this doesn’t seem to be the case, given that the public’s opinion on marijuana has continued to be more and more open.

Harris began her career entirely against the legalization of weed. She even campaigned against it while garnering votes to become the Attorney General, and as a prosecutor she was harsh on cannabis cases.

However, she has completely flipped on the issue, and has continually boasted about the Biden administration’s many marijuana pardons. But she doesn’t stop there – Harris is more supportive than Biden, supporting full-on legalization of marijuana. In March of this year, she backed this stance in a closed-off meeting with pardon recipients.

Kamala Harris would the best shot at federal marijuana legalization that we’ve ever had.

In a landscape where Harris’ prosecution bonafides have begun to hold more weight, we should be thankful that she’s leaving one area of that background behind where it belongs.
