California gives out $40 million from marijuana taxes

California taxes its weed like crazy. When you’re getting up to 35% in taxes, it’s not a mystery why the illicit market continues to thrive. But, at the very least, we’re getting to see that some of that money is going to good places.

Applications were submitted to receive grants totaling over $40 million. The recipients were nonprofits and local health departments that deal with those effected by the war on drugs.

Here are a few that received grants this year:

  • Poverello House (Fresno County): $3 million
  • The Los Angeles Free Clinic (Los Angeles County): $900,000
  • Saint John’s Program for Real Change (Sacramento County): $2,953,007
  • Bay Area Community Resources, Inc. (City and County of San Francisco): $1,200,000
  • Community Bridges (Santa Cruz County): $750,000

Last year, the grant program gave out $50 million. It’s unclear why the number went down this year.

It’s nice to see a small drop of the tax money (over a billion each year) go to good places, but I can’t help but wonder why there aren’t also grant programs for the cultivators and those in the industry creating the product that the state is profiting so much from. They certainly need the help.
