Maryland marijuana sells big on its first weekend

The adult market for recreational marijuana opened over the July 4th weekend, and the state reported huge numbers from those sales.

More than $10 million worth of marijuana was sold in just the state of Maryland over the extended weekend. Last year, with only medical marijuana sales, the state recorded $3.9 million.

As opposed to the slow rollout in New York with licenses, about 100 medical cannabis dispensaries were granted dual licenses to sell both medical and recreational marijuana in the state. So when the market opened, there were plenty of options for buyers.

“This is Maryland’s time to lead in this new space—our time to forge new partnerships between our government and our people, our time to create an economy that is more competitive, while also being more equitable, and it’s our time to get this right while we do right,” said Maryland’s Governor, Wes Moore in a video posted to Twitter.

No doubt a success story for the state, we’ll have to see in the months to come how much of this initial push the industry can sustain.

Maryland, starting today, recreational cannabis is officially legal for adults in our state.

We are writing a new chapter in the story of cannabis in America. One that will lift communities harmed by criminalization and build a more competitive and more equitable economy. pic.twitter.com/UeIWx8w96L
